On what are the astrological sign descriptions based?
Some traits are shared by certain signs. Astrology uses two
general classifications to explain how the same characteristic can
be shared by different signs. These two classifications also focus
on the true nature of each sign as they are distinct from each
other. One classification is known as Elements which divides the
twelve signs into four groups: Fire signs, Earth signs, Air signs
and Water signs. The other classification is known as Qualities,
which divides the twelve signs into three groups: Cardinal signs,
Fixed signs, and Mutable signs.
Elements:
The first element is Fire, represented by the signs Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. For these people, the first reaction to everything is a physical one.
Aries likes to be active simply as a release of energy. Leo wants to get around in order to enjoy the attention and sociable companionship of others. Sagittarius loves the freedom that comes from being physically independent.
The second element is Earth, represented by the signs Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. These individuals are invariably of a practical nature and seldom do anything without a purpose.
Taurus will doggedly pursue anything that fills a basic need or desire. Virgo patiently tries to secure their own needs through service and responsibility to others, though they are not above using guilt as a weapon to get what they want. Capricorn will forego temporary needs and desires. They are in it for the long haul.
The third element is Air, represented by the signs Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. These individuals have an intellectual orientation to everything. Gemini wants to find out what is going on. Libra does not like to be alone and therefore seeks the companionship of others. Aquarius, inherently intrigued by people and society, wants to be where others are gathered.
The fourth element is Water, represented by the signs Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. Those born in a Water sign always lead with their hearts. Cancer wants emotional satisfaction through home and family. Scorpio seeks emotional satisfaction through manipulation and control, and Pisces seeks emotional satisfaction on whatever physical, spiritual, or creative level they can find.
Qualities:
The Cardinal (Angular) signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. People born in these signs are strong-willed and have a desire for accomplishment; they are the doers, the movers and shakers in the world. Cardinal sign personalities like to be involved in major projects and to take charge of whatever needs to be done.
The Fixed (Succedent) signs are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. These personalities are cautious and tend to be extremely stubborn. Their opinions and habits are not readily altered. They do not appreciate unexpected, sudden, or imposed changes. The tenacity of these personalities is a valuable asset in research or other areas where patience and stamina are required. Their cautious nature prevents unnecessary waste of their time, talent, and resources.
The Mutable (Cadent) signs are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. These individuals have remarkable ability to adapt to all kinds of situations, making it easy for others to live and work with them. Their adaptability makes Mutable sign people survivors. However, their willingness to constantly adjust to the influence of other people's situations can seriously inhibit the growth and development of their own talents and personalities.

Why don't some people seem to fit their astrological sign?
There are two reasons why some people don't seem to fit the descriptive characteristics of their astrological sign. In the first instance, they may not
really understand the entire astrological description of their sign and are basing their opinion only on a few generalities. A more thorough explanation
often reveals that most individuals do demonstrate the inherent characteristics of their sun sign. In the second instance, astrological interpretation is
based on knowing the complete horoscope of an individual which indicates where all the celestial bodies were positioned at the time of birth. It will
reveal how strongly an individual exhibits the traits associated with his or her sun sign. After the sun's sign, the most important position is the sign
in which the moon was located at birth. For example, let's say at the time of birth the sun was in Aries. The moon may also be in Aries at birth but it may
just as easily be in any of the other eleven astrological signs. The astrological sign position of the moon has an important bearing on personality and
temperament from an emotional point of view. It describes how a person will emotionally handle the characteristics and traits indicated by the position of
the sun at birth. Many calendars and almanacs list the daily lunar positions.
Negative Opposites to Sun Signs
It is interesting to look at the people you know in terms of their Sun signs. The Sun represents the quality of a person's spiritual radiance, if they give their spirit the opportunity to radiate by expressing the sign.
When a person's spirit is being expressed, they will show strong characteristics of their Sun sign: positive when feeling good, and negative when having difficulties. Positive or negative, the whole personality is holding together, and their light is shining even though it may feel uncomfortable to others. You would say of such people that they are reasonably well integrated, and there will be a light in their eyes.
If this is not the case, the personality will be scattered and the person will feel every obstacle as a great hurdle to be overcome, instead of being just the next thing to deal with. There are many ways of being less than our best, and they are all part of being human.
The following are some of the negative traits of opposite signs:
Aries, when afraid to act, or staggering from a perceived attack, can become negative Libra -- indecisive, worried, inactive, going on about different possibilities without enthusiasm.
Taurus, when feeling unsteady, uncertain, or unsafe, or having lost a treasured possession, can become negative Scorpio -- angry, seething, hurtful statements, blaming, vengeful.
Gemini, when feeling unable to think or communicate, can become negative Sagittarius -- head in the clouds, can't be bothered to explain, witty jokes at another's expense, wanting to get away.
Cancer, when feeling unloved, or heavily responsible for their loved ones, can become negative Capricorn -- getting on with their work huffily.
Leo, when feeling a lack of energy, or when rebuffed or hurt, can become negative Aquarius -- keeping away from people, won't say how they feel, apathetic.
Virgo, when feeling unable to cope, or when their helpful intentions are misunderstood, can become negative Pisces -- emotional, unfocused, martyred, weepy, feeling useless.
Libra, when feeling challenged or criticized, or feeling pressured to make a decision, can become negative Aries -- aggressive, argumentative.
Scorpio, when feeling exposed and vulnerable, or deeply hurt, can become negative Taurus -- stubbornly silent, obstructive, etc.
Sagittarius, when feeling trapped by responsibility or overburdened with commitments, can become negative Gemini -- flippant, superficial, talking without meaning, upset and not talking at all.
Capricorn, when feeling overburdened with responsibilities and unsupported, can become negative Cancer -- moody, possessive, emotional.
Aquarius, when losing their detached point of view about something, can become negative Leo -- dogmatic, domineering, not listening.
Pisces, when feeling taken for granted or exhausted from caring for others, can become negative Virgo -- cold, critical, perfectionistic.
A look at the planets:
SUN:
The sun rules will power and ego. It is the core of your potential and uniqueness as an individual; who you are and what you are about. It represents
the main direction and focus you want your life to take, and your determination to accomplish what you set out to do. The Sun is the astrological ruler of Leo.
MOON:
The moon rules desire as opposed to ego, need as opposed to expediency or reason. It describes how you feel about yourself, how you handle relationships (and mother),
and how you emotionally respond to situations and experiences. It describes the flow of your daily functions; physical, emotional, and mental. The moon
represents your residence and domestic environment. The Moon is
the astrological ruler of Cancer.
MERCURY:
Mercury indicates mental outlook, intellectual endeavors, the way you think and communicate. It represents ideas, methods, and information. It rules your
hands and thus your manual dexterity and mechanical skills. Mercury also describes transportation; that is, how you get where you're going physically and
mentally. Mercury is the astrological ruler of Gemini and Virgo.
VENUS:
Venus rules your social attitudes and behavior, and your aesthetic tastes and inclinations. Venus indicates your values. It describes romance, marriage and
other partnerships (and female relationships), capacity for humor, and the pursuit of pleasure. Venus is the
astrological ruler of Taurus and Libra.
MARS:
Mars rules physical energy and efforts. It describes the strength and direction of the physical force that drives your ego, fires your emotions, and
encourages your mental endeavors and communicative skills, (male relationships and associations), risk-taking inclinations, and the physical
challenges you are likely to encounter. Mars is the astrological ruler of Aries, and the co-ruler of Scorpio.
JUPITER:
Jupiter rules your potential for growth and expansion on many levels; physical, intellectual, spiritual, cultural, and the accumulation of material assets,
power, and status, (father relationships). It describes your optimism and aspirations. Jupiter is the astrological ruler of
Sagittarius and the ancient ruler of Pisces.
SATURN:
Saturn rules responsibilities, restrictions and limitations you are apt to encounter, and the lessons you must learn in life. It does not deny or diminish
imagination, inspiration, spirituality, and good fortune but it does demand that these things be given structure and meaning. Saturn is the astrological
ruler of Capricorn and the ancient ruler of Aquarius.
URANUS:
Uranus rules personal as well as societal freedom. It indicates originality of thought and expression. In society it rules radical ideas and people as
well as revolutionary events that upset established structures. Since groups of people with Uranus in the same sign are separated by 84 years, the influence of this planet in a sign is
generational. It describes areas of unpredictability, and where you or your life style may be different than those around you. It relates to the unusual or
unique as well as friends and associations to which you belong. Uranus is the astrological ruler of Aquarius.
NEPTUNE:
Neptune rules those who are oppressed or abandoned; the misfits of society. On a higher level it rules visionaries, and those who are glamorous and
charismatic. It represents spirituality, mysticism, and ideals. Since 164 years separate people born during its transit of one sign and those born when it
returns,
Neptune's significance in any sign is described as generational or historical. On a personal level, Neptune's house position and the aspects it makes
with other planets in your natal chart will describe spirituality, abstract thinking, illusion, disillusionment, and other areas of your life where things
aren't always what they seem. It rules derangement, guilt, persecution, and describes the potential for experiences related to confinement, abandonment,
and addiction or physical intolerance to drugs. Neptune is the astrological ruler of Pisces.
PLUTO:
Pluto takes approximately 248 years to make one cycle through all twelve signs. The period Pluto spends in each sign can vary from twelve years to thirty
two years due to the eccentricity of its orbit. Like atomic energy (a force ruled by Pluto), the presence and direction of Pluto's energy are never obvious
until it is used. Pluto's influence in any sign is interpreted as generational or historical. Pluto rules intense energy, and describes the areas in which you
consciously or subconsciously seek to exercise power or control. Pluto is also linked to your karmic responsibility, and in this respect, it describes the
areas where you must gain the deepest level of understanding. Pluto is the astrological ruler of Scorpio.
Summary of the 12 Houses:
An Angular house sits on an angle. The angles are the four cardinal points of the chart: Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven, and Nadir. Planets located inn these houses are tradationally held to be strengthened by this position. This is also known as "accidentally dignified." The angular houses are the First, Fourth, Seventh, and Tenth House, corresponding to the Cardinal signs. Planets placed within Succedent houses are neither strengthened nor weakened. The Succedent houses are the Second, Fifth, Eighth, and Eleventh houses, and correspond to the Fixed signs. Planets within Cadent houses are traditionally held to be weakened, or "accidentally debilitated." This is true for all but the natural rulers of the cadent houses: Mercury in the Third and Sixth houses, Jupiter of the Ninth house, and Neptune of the Twelfth house. These correspond to the Mutable signs.
