Basic Overview
In many different traditions lighting a candle is a sacred action. Candles are fascinating and have many uses. Lighting a candle at a child's birth honors the spirit of the child coming into this world.
At death, it shows the spirit the way out into the next incarnation. And on your birthday, a candle reminds you of your own light, which should always be honored. It is also used for "wishing" spells, such as when you close your eyes and make a wish on the birthday candle. This is just simplified candle magick.
Working magic with candles is very simple, yet very effective! This is one of my favorite ways to cast a spell. Fire is purifying and transformative; it can burn away all those negative things in your life and bring in the positive, or send your positive energy out. Basically all you need is a candle, a lighter, and your intentions. But it helps to work sympathetic magic along with the candle magic to reinforce it.
Before you start any kind of magic you must be clear in your intentions and how you word your spell, but you knew that already :-) But, I feel I should at least go over my opinions on the matter.
It is my opinion that magic is magic (neutral energy), neither black nor white, more like gray. When you take this energy and decide to cast a spell, then it becomes whatever you changed it to become.
I believe that casting spells requires responsibility. I'm not saying you should never bind or cast a hex on someone, or even cast a mischief spell, BUT you should be willing to accept all repercussions of said spell.
Neither do I think that the badness will come back on you 3 times or 9 times or whatever, but it is only logical that there will be effects that you should take into consideration before you do. It's just like anything else; the action will create a reaction and sometimes the reaction is not what you expected. So, think carefully about it and if you are fully willing to accept this, then go for it!
Some of you may feel this is absolutely wrong, and that's ok. This is my opinion only, and as I said earlier, this is not the only way to believe. **You've decided that your situation warrants a spell, so now what?
Choose a color for the candle that corresponds with your intent. This can be used for candle magic or anytime you need color to help boost your intent. Some colors may be more difficult to find in a candle, or only available at certain times. If you can not find a candle in a certain color try to find something of that color to incorporate into the ritual. If you can't find anything, then substitute a different color with similar properties.
**Now that you've chosen the color, which day is best for your needs?
**It is now a good time to inscribe the candle with symbols of your intent. This isn't necessary but it does help focus your intention.
**Now that you've chosen the color and the day of the week, now choose an oil that reflects your intent. This can be something you find at your local occult shop (special blend), an essential oil, or something you've created that you've empowered for this spell.
**You are going to now dress or anoint the candle. Just a little bit of oil is all you need! You can use extra virgin olive oil in place of any fancy oils, or you can make a blend using essential oils specifically chosen for the spell. And remember, oil is flammable, so be careful not to get the oil on the wick. Let the candle dry before you light it. If you want something to come TO you, start from the middle and apply the oil with your fingers, moving toward yourself. Then turn the candle around and repeat. Some people start at the wick and move to the middle and repeat from the base to the middle. It is really up to you, as long as you are bringing the oil toward you. If you want something to go away FROM you, just do the opposite and move your hands away from yourself as you dress it.
It's now time to get down to business.
Make sure you will be undisturbed for a while. It is now time to light the candle, but do not use matches. The sulfur in matches is a banishment tool and will lessen the effects of candle magick or even make it completely useless. Use a lighting stick, an incense match or a lighter to light the wick. Focus deeply about what it is you are casting this spell for. (I know you have already thought about this and have worded your spell carefully and explicitly.) If you are not speaking the spell, then visualize what you intend as the result of this spell. If you really want to add some extra oomph, then use some sympathetic magic--put as much money as you have around the candle, making sure it is at a safe distance.
After you feel it is ready, you may move on to other things, leaving the candle to burn--as long as you are in the room--until it goes out, or you may snuff the flame. If you must extinguish the candle before it has completely burned down (such as when using the candle spell over a period of days, or even just in case you have to leave unexpectedly) be sure to use a candle snuffer, or wet your fingers and pinch out the flame. Do not blow it out, as it is said that this blows away all the magick.
As with all spells, your focus and attitude are extremely important. Pour as much energy into this spell as you possibly can. If you are feeling sick or drained of energy, then it is best to wait before spell-casting. You want the best most potent energy in the spell, and if you're feeling like crap from the newest virus going around, then your spell will not be effective; or if it is effective to some extent, then it will be infused with tainted, imbalanced energy.
And remember to always burn your candle in a safe place! Never leave a burning candle unattended. Ever.
