Crystals pick up energy (positive as well as negative) and therefore need to be cleansed regularly.
There are several ways of doing this, the most popular being running cold water over it (for a lot of us this means tap water, but if you are lucky enough to live near a living body of moving water, then this is by far better), letting it sit in a bowl of water with a small amount of seasalt, or letting stay in full moonlight overnight.
You can also let it sit in direct sunlight for a while, bury in the earth for about 3 days, blow on the crystal (using your power of intention, for a light cleansing- not for deep cleansing) and I have even heard of letting it sit in pure milk for a while.
Personally I use the first 3 suggestions, depending on how much negativity a stone has picked up.
The following is a small list of crystals and their magical associations:


Agate: Helps with improving self-esteem, vitality, courage, strength, love, protection, also supports other stones.

Alexandrite: Luck, spiritual transformation, love.

Amazonite: Success, self expression.

Amber: Although this is not really a crystal (it is fossilized pine resin), it has healing qualities. It supports the immune system and digestion, and can even help with depression.

Amethyst:Spirituality, intuition, dispels fear and anxiety, relieves emotional and physical pain, psychic energy, peace, insomnia, happiness, opens the crown chakra.

Apache Tears:Helps release inner (emotional) pain, turmoil, and fear.

Aquamarine: Psychic awareness, courage, purification, good for problems concerning the throat, neck, teeth, and jaw problems, balances all the chakras.

Aventurine: Balances the whole body's energy, visual acuity, skin problems, mental agility, healing. Also helps with money, luck, peace, and opens the heart chakra.

Azurite: Dreams, healing, concentration (memory), bone problems, psychic energy.

Beryl: Energy, protection (water or weather related especially), psychic awareness, love.

Bloodstone: Balances the first four chakras, strength, stops bleeding, self-confidence, victory, courage, legal affairs, wealth. Helps with liver kidney and spleen problems, also helps with the digestive and urinary system. This is a powerful stone, especially when used for healing.

Blue Lace Agate: Part of the agate family, a great healing, calming stone.

Calcite: Centering, grounding, calms fears and compulsive behaviors, peace, purification, money.

Carnelian: Helps with back and spine problems, digestion, combats blood poisoning, rheumatism, helps heal wounds; alleviates jealousy, fear, rage and anger, apathy; verbal skills and communication, sexual energy.

Celestite: Compassion, calming, healing.

Chrysocolla: Communication, vitality, wisdom, peace, love.

Chrysoprase: Fertility, nervous system, heart, childbirth, hemorrhage. Restores balance and purpose to imbalanced (neurotic) behavior; healing, prosperity, protection, happiness.

Citrine: Diabetes, skin problems, depression, creativity, sexual energy, protection, psychic ability, helps prevent nightmares.

Clear Quartz: The master of crystals- healing, balances energy, helps immune system; intensifies energy (positive or negative).

Coral: Anemia, menstrual problems, lethargy.

Diamond:Spirituality, courage, strength, mental and sexual energy and abilities, healing, emotional pain.

Emerald: Helps with high blood pressure, visual acuity( and eye infections); balance, love, prosperity, mental and psychic abilities, dreams and meditation, opens the heart chakra.

Fire Opal: Boosts energy, aids digestion, breaks up crystallization. Fluorite: (Green:) good for the workplace, calms nervous sytem, helps with clear thinking and concentration, fights depression. (Violet:) is similar to amethyst and may be used as a substitute.

Garnet: Physical energy, protection,healing, strength, purification, compassion, opens root and crown chakras; aids the reproductive system and sexual energy and drive.

Geode:Fertility, childbirth, dreams, meditation.

Hematite: Grounding, calming, fights anxiety, physical strength, healing, restful sleep, divination, intuition; improves blood disorders.

Indigo Sapphire: Insomnia, confusion,
Jade: Healing, protection, peace, long life, courage, wisdom, love, prosperity, balnces the whole system, childbirth, headaches (and migraines), strengthens the heart.

Jasper:Energy, health and healing, protection, beauty.

Jet: Depression.

Kunzite:Communication, creativity, balance, grounding.

Lapis Lazuli: Prosperity, love, fidelity, protection, healing, beauty, courage, creativity, intuition; helps throat congestion.

Lepidolite: Spirituality, peace, psychic abilities, emotional balance, prevents nightmares.

Lodestone:Psychic protection.

Malachite: Power, energy, protection; heals and balances the whole mind/body system; helps aid spleen and pancreas functions; eye infections, asthma, menstrual problems and disorders, rheumatism.

Moonstone: Intuition, grounding, emotional sensitivity, sleep, love, protection, harmony, magic.

Obsidian:Grounding, dispels negativity, divination, protection.

Onyx: Binding, protection, emotional balance, sexual self-control.

Opal:Power, psychic ability, emotional balance, luck.

Pearl: Creates changes, clears the etheric body.

Peridot: Emotional balance, intuition, health, prosperity, sleep, protection, calming, purifying; good for digestion and bowels, relieves sadness. Pyrites: digestion.

Red Jasper: Provides earth energy for protection; good for general protection against infection; helps with liver and stomach problems.

Rhodonite: Mental clarity, memory, peace, confidence; opens the crown chakra.
